AMSAT UPDATE

Hi again to the BARA Gang!
Fresh off the BARA Hamfest a few weeks ago, I can report a few items from AMSAT. The present Area Coordinators on the list found at the AMSAT website (www.amsat.org) has been adjusted to include those that are actively participating in this volunteer slot. There is a new NY Area coordinator, Pete, WB2OQQ. He is actually going to many hamfests in the NY area and doing a fine job representing that side of the Hudson.
At the BARA hamfest, we talked to many people about their activity and interests in satellite modes. Many were new to this part of the hobby. I gave many hints to get on the birds and answered newbie questions. I tried to get on AO-51 but didn’t hear the bird and it turned out to be “off!” A software glitch. Maybe in October…
As one of the editors of the AMSAT News Service, I am starving for data to write about and breaking news to send out to all. This year’s Satellite Symposium will be in Maryland near the BWI airport. It is the 40th Anniversary of AMSAT so there is going to be a fun time near where the organization was born. Many of the past key people will be there and of course, a fun party. Keep informed about this happening via the AMSAT website. If you never have planned to attend one of these events, it is only about a 3.5 Hour drive to the location and considered relatively close. I also meet many other members that create the equipment for sats and develop software and mechanical designs for our future and current satellites being built. Gathering great information to use in the ANS Bulletins.
Presently, AO-51, VO-52, AO-29 and AO-7 are great satellites to use. I just was on AO-7 and it is in mode U/V. It is the satellite that came back to life after a short in the batteries opened and is now fully operating on solar panels for power. SSB is the primary mode. For up to date info on what satellites are presently usable and their modes of operation, go to the AMSAT website and there are direct links to information. You can also go there and purchase items to support AMSAT.
Remember, you are AMSAT. (My pet speech) We cannot put satellites for your pleasure up in space without DONATIONS. If you use a satellite and haven’t joined AMSAT, it is time to feel guilty and become a supporting member. (If this sounds like Public TV, it is the same plea.) Help out if you can.

This is my satellite setup. No it isn’t
cranked up. I’ve since added another 2.4 ghz yagi and moved my
435mhz preamp to the antenna. So much easier than going on the
roof. |
